P.050 Understanding the neurocritical care educational needs of trainees

Background: Patients with neurological conditions account for 15% of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Neurocritical care (NCC) has been proven reduce mortality, improve functional outcomes and increase patient/family satisfaction. Trainees often lack knowledge, skills, experience needed provide quality NCC. Consequently, timely effective is compromised, team dynamics suffer, trainees may distress. Methods: To fully understand educational needs, we surveyed University Calgary residents from various programs who rotate through Neuro-ICU. Results: indicated a confidence in their knowledge skills most NCC disorders/scenarios ICU. While majority expressed interest learning NCC, 58% were not aware NCC-related competencies outlined specialties by Royal College Physicians Surgeons, 30% had no objectives own. Teaching modalities preferred included patient-centred bedside teaching (96%) easily accessible resources such as pocket-sized cards (90%) and/or phone app (96%).
